It has been and still is uncertain what really causes high blood pressure or hypertension. For 95% of individuals the main cause is never found. It is likely that several factors that are interrelated contribute to high blood pressure (BP) in most people. For example:

• an overactive autonomic nervous system
• an overactive hormone system that is related to the kidneys
• genetic predisposition (inherited tendency to high BP)
• a fault in the cells of small blood vessels that can lead to the narrowing of blood vessels and increased BP.

People have always believed that physical and psychological stress and tension also raises blood pressure. But the rises in BP that is cause by stress only lasts for minutes or maybe a few hours, these rises are normal and happen to everyone. In order to have real damage to the organs the BP has to be on a steady average level for weeks, months or years.
High blood pressure is twice as common in people who have one or two hypertensive parents. But high BP is rarely just a simply inherited disease, multiple genes are likely to contribute to the disease. Although there are a few exceptions as always. From the studies of the population comes out that about a third of the variances in blood pressure within large populations can actually be predicted from knowledge of blood pressure in parents, sisters and brothers.
Drugs and medication can also be a cause of high BP for a lot of people. for example home remedies that are bought across the counter from the chemist, drugs of abuse and addiction, herbal medicine and prescribed medication.

• Drugs of abuse and addiction - Drugs like "Ecstasy," causes wakefulness, high moods, very high BP and indifference to food. Drugs can also cause hallucinations, and, combined with very high activity and high room temperature, "Ecstasy" may raise BP high enough to even cause death.
• Home remedies that are bought over the counter - Remedies for hay fever or shrinking up the air passages in the nose during colds can rise BP, cause it contains chemicals that are closely related to naturally occuring chemicals in th body that influence blood pressure. Nasal decongestants only work for a short time and causes rebound swelling as soon as they are stopped. Because of this many people keep using them for moths or even years and this can lead to severe chronic obstruction of the nose cause by the same drug that they are using for treatment. These drugs also give people a lift and wake them up in the morning so they can become addicted to them. Do not use any remedies or drugs unless you have to.
• Prescribed medication - These drugs can increase BP 5-6 mmHG diastolic pressure, which is about the same amount that blood pressure lowering drugs bring it down. You can tell your doctor or the chemist that you have high BP so you can have an alternative to painkillers.

Herbal medicine - They can cause high BP or influence the BP-lowering medication in a way that makes them less effective. If you decide to take any herbal remedies than always consult with your doctor or pharmacist, whether that have any side effects for you.
